MONASH University Sunway campus postgraduate candidate Tanuja Rajah brings new
meaning to the phrase “make love, not war” — no one is going to look at cells the same way again. She is the first Malaysian to win the annual Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) final — a competition organised specifically for students pursuing a higher degree by research to challenge them on sharing their work in everyday language.
Tanuja, a third-year postgraduate candidate in immunology at the Sunway campus’ School of Science, offered a unique take in her presentation Caspases — More Than Just Killers, drawing on themes of love and death.
“I tried to make it animated and find a way to show how significant diseases are and how T cells can help fight certain illnesses such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis,” says Tanuja. She was judged the best of nine finalists for her ability to convey her highly complex thesis in a clear, concise and humorous manner — descr ibing how cells divided, multiplied and “committed suicide” — in a way that non-scientists would comprehend.
“For example, when cells make love, they multiply; when cells make war, they kill invading cells like bacteria and viruses, and, cells also kill them selves. ” Tanuja, the first from Monash University Sunway campus to take part in the competition, will compete in a transnational contest with fellow champions from other Australian and New Zealand universities.
The transnational final will be held at the University of Western Australia on Sept 29. “I wasn’t expecting this! I only signed up for the competition one hour before the registration closed, but I am so glad I did! This has been such an exper ience,” she says.
The 27-year-old received a Bachelor of Science in Genetics from the University of Melbourne and later completed her honours at the Sunway campus.
The 3MT competition develops students’ academic and research communication skills through sharing the importance and potential impact of their work to their peers and the broader community.
